It’s World Series Time!

I want this hat. Size 7 1/2 please.

I want this hat. Size 7 1/2 please.

Yes the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers like I predicted as did the Boston Red Sox by beating the Detroit Tigers. Got both of those right. Sorry to all my Tigers fan friends. I wish Jim Leyland the best in his retirement. Remember he was a Cardinals scout before he took your managerial job.

30 other major league teams, cities, and fan bases do not have their team in the World Series. This marks the St. Louis Cardinals 19th World Series. The last time they were here they won it all in 2011. This matchup is a rematch of the 2004 World Series. I was at game four with my wife and some friends and we happily congratulated all of the Boston fans that were there. This year there is no curse, no rally squirrel, just some beards and a battle for the World Series trophy.

The NLCS was a good series. I thought we wouldn’t blow the Dodgers away but we kind of did in game six. That game relaxed me and I enjoyed the evening with friends. I am glad of two things; I don’t have to listen to the terrible TBS announcers anymore and no more Yasiel Puig and his unprofessionalism. Even the bad announcers knew he took forever to get in the batter’s box. I will keep the rest of my comments to myself. Just please, get TBS out of postseason baseball coverage.

Great job by the Boston Red Sox. They basically waited the Detroit Tigers out in those games. Max Scherzer pitched well for the Detroit Tigers, but not good enough. Or should I say long enough. He had too many pitches both times and when they took him out the bullpen gave up two grand slams. That Detroit bullpen has been a question all season.

This World Series prediction has been difficult for me. At the start of October, I predicted the Red Sox to beat the Atlanta Braves in the World Series. And since the Cardinals never played the Braves, the only team I knew could beat us, I will have to go Cardinals in seven but I am hoping six.

The teams are pretty evenly matched. I give the Red Sox the edge in the experienced pitching staff but the Cardinals have kids that have been shown the right way to play by some veterans both on and off the field. Let me go on record by saying that I wish they would have saved Michael Wacha to start game three so he could also pitch game seven, but I am not paid to manage this team so I will support this decision. Heck, Manager Mike Matheny could go with a three man rotation for all I know. On offense, the Red Sox have one of my non-Cardinal favorites in Dustin Pedroia along with David Ortiz. Shane Victorino and Stephen Drew do not scare me. Mike Napoli kind of does though. If he gets hot and can play in St. Louis, we may have trouble with a capital T on our hands. St. Louis is ready for the challenge and with Allen Craig coming back to at least DH they should feel energized. Can Jon Jay/Shane Robinson/whoever plays centerfield provide enough offense? Yes, but just barely.
Please realize Cardinals Nation that we should not take this team for granted. These are some great players and a lot different than the team that won in 2011. I personally hope Yadier Molina had a big offensive series and wins World Series MVP.

From Furlough Fuzz to Playoff Patch

Last night the Senate and House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution to bring back all Federal employees to work and include back pay. This current CR now takes us thru January 15, 2014. Committees will be created to work on a budget to fund different branches of the Government for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2014. I hope they get it done this time.

I was just one of the 30,000 St. Louis area Federal employees affected by the shutdown. It was estimated somewhere around 5-6 million dollars a day was lost locally due to the shutdown. I would like to give a shout out to one local restaurant that is one of my favorites. Sugarfire Smoke House (1) gave furloughed Federal employees a sandwich special. I and a friend took advantage of this once. It was their ‘Shutdown Special’ and it had brisket, pulled pork, and turkey on it with lettuce, tomato and onion. They included a side and a drink for no charge. Yeah, I said no charge. Me and my family are going there tonight for dinner to personally thank them and pay them back. What they did went above and beyond.

Before Shaving

I shaved my beard this morning and decided to keep the soul patch area for the remainder of the time the St. Louis Cardinals are in the playoffs. If they win the World Series, let’s see how long it stays.

After Shaving

I got quite a few things done while I was off, from some deep cleaning to organization to just some sit around and relax time. I am happy to be back to work. I have a few things around the house that were starting to fall apart and the money from my normal paycheck will help get things fixed.

I am proud to be a Federal employee. I am proud to be a veteran. I am proud to be a husband. I am proud to be a father. I am proud to be an American. I am proud to be a Christian.

Family and the League Championship Series

Well, so far I have gotten the ALCS right and half of the NLCS. Things change with five games on how I think about the rest of the postseason. That’s why I am updating my LCS predictions now. Also, I am still furloughed, so I have the time.

American League Championship Series:
Detroit Tigers vs Boston Red Sox. This is the matchup I have predicted. Detroit handled the Oakland A’s by getting them to swing and miss a lot. That will not happen with Boston. They have too many good bats and just enough pitching to get them through Detroit. One win versus Justin Verlander or Max Scherzer will get it done and the Red Sox will win it in six. Expect Dustin Pedroia to have a big series. And no, I am not just siding with the bearded team since I haven’t shaved in ten days.

National League Championship Series:
St. Louis Cardinals vs Los Angeles Dodgers. I was a little bit shocked about the result of both of these NLDS series, but that’s why they play the games. Looking back on the Dodgers destroying the Atlanta Braves it was clear that they just beat them. The Dodgers won’t have it that easy against the Cardinals. The Pittsburgh Pirates gave them a bit more than they bargained for. Gerrit Cole pitched a lot better than I thought he would. But he was not near as good as Cardinals rookie Michael Wacha and ace Adam Wainwright.
On to the series that starts tonight. Joe Kelly will wow a national audience. Zack Greinke is the enemy to Cardinals Nation. Michael Wacha will pitch another great game against Clayton Kershaw and it sets up Adam Wainwright. Adam Wainwright is the man in St. Louis right now. He pitched a gem, told the world what is important, and led his team in celebration. “There is no amount of money that’s worth what we have going inside this clubhouse,” he said. “This is a family to me. This is more than teammates. This is a family. So I feel so blessed to be here with them and share moments like this. And we’ll remember them for the rest of our lives.”
Do you think the Cardinals are gonna let some high priced Dodgers team beat them? Heck, I bet only half of the fans in Dodgers Stadium during the postseason have been to a game all year and if they did, they arrived late. Los Angeles is not a baseball town. Heck, they have a former NBA basketball player as an owner. Cardinals in six and it could be five. Momentum is clearly on the Cardinals side.

But remember, that’s why they play the games. Anything can happen. I will be watching and I hope you will be too. Share the word and the love of baseball.

Well it’s been over a week off of work for me and a lot of my fellow Federal employees. This is a Government Shutdown. I wouldn’t call this a vacation. I would call it everyday life coming up to smack you in the face. You see, most Federal employees do not get paid like they would do in the public sector. Yes, we get job security, maybe some more time off and sometimes it’s hard to fire us. I am part of the group of Federal employees that doesn’t get paid as much. Before October 1st, I missed 10% of my pay for three pay periods this past summer. That sucked. We tend to eat out more during baseball season for Josh, so that just happened less. Our pantry went a tad lower but we survived.

I see stories of how veterans are getting denied access to monuments, mothers not getting their proper nutrition, and others not getting their houses or retirements. I feel sorry for all of them. I believe there are millions of people being affected by this shutdown. What about the snack shop in our building run by the blind couple? What about the lunch places around one of our campus locations that hold 3000 or more employees? I also know I am not paying city earnings tax for these days so even the local communities that have Federal employees are being hit.

Something has to be done. I am not a political guy. Get the two sides to meet. Whoever needs to talk to get this done. I don’t care about no fiscal cliff, or whatever party you belong to. Millions of Americans are being affected by this shutdown. I don’t want to miss all this pay, but I will survive. Heck some of the people that are working are not guaranteed to get paid. Fix this mess you started or nobody will be reelected. As of today I am voting for the other guy no matter who it is. If you as a politician could not do something to stop this, let’s get someone else in who might no matter their political party.

2013 Post Season Predictions

2013 Postseason logo

2013 Postseason logo

Since I am shut down today, I figured I would get a blog out. Might as well do my post season predictions. Good luck to all of the teams out there!

Wild Card Games:
Pittsburgh Pirates vs Cincinnati Reds. I see Pittsburgh winning this one game. Francisco Liriano will do a good job of keeping the Reds down and I do not think it will take much. They are not playing well.
Tampa Bay Rays vs Cleveland Indians. Cleveland is playing as good as any team out there right now and the Rays used Price to get to this game so I give the Indians the edge.

American League Division Series:
Detroit Tigers vs Oakland A’s. As long as Detroit is on, they will beat the A’s easily. I think they will be mostly on, but the series will go five games.
Boston Red Sox vs Cleveland Indians. Boston will have the momentum and the hot streak and they will beat the Indians in 4.

American League Championship Series:
Detroit Tigers vs Boston Red Sox. I am thinking this will be a series for the ages. Some of the injuries that Detroit has been experiencing will catch up to them here and Boston will win in 7.

National League Division Series:
Atlanta Braves vs Los Angeles Dodgers. This will be a great five game series battle but Atlanta is the better team. They understand about playing together and win it in five.
Pittsburgh Pirates vs St. Louis Cardinals. I don’t think Pittsburgh can match up with Cardinals in a short series. The Pirates are more hurt then they will publically admit and Cards win in 4.

National League Championship Series:
Atlanta Braves vs St. Louis Cardinals. This is a tough series for me to pick. Something just tells me that the Braves will win it in seven. I hope I am wrong. I hope it will be a respectably fought series with the Braves just having the edge.

World Series:
Boston Red Sox vs Atlanta Braves. Boston has shown to me that they have the team concept down. They will bond together and win the World Series in six on Boston’s home field. All Star Game results matter this year.

Let’s see how I do. At the beginning of the season I had the Washington Nationals beating the Texas Rangers in the World Series. Neither of those teams made the playoffs. Baseball is my favorite sport because it is so unpredictable.

Vacation Thoughts, Part Two

Stan & Max with me and my wife

Stan & Max with me and my wife

I have had a lot of time to think about last month’s vacation to Wisconsin and Northern Pines. (1) There are a few things from the week that I keep coming back to, the people and the experiences. Let me just say that I cannot thank everyone behind the scenes enough for doing everything they can to make these the things I most remember. This year I got to be a small part of the behind the scenes help and let’s just say I am more amazed of the work that Dean & Julie Jaderston do all year round making sure Northern Pines goes the way that God has planned it.

This past year was the 40th Anniversary of Northern Pines. They started at Lake Geneva in Wisconsin, outgrew that within the last 10 years and hope to fill Green Lake Conference Center within the next few years. I hope I am around to see that. Northern Pines also has a Board of Directors that arranges speakers, calls conferees, and just prays for everything that is involved with these two weeks each summer.

The teaching for the week was outstanding. What an honor to listen to the minds and lessons of Bill Crawford from Water’s Edge Church (2) in El Segundo, California, Bob Botsford from Horizon Christian Fellowship (3) in Rancho Santa Fe, California, and Dr. Stanley Toussaint from Dallas Theological Seminary (4). All were great speakers but I was honored and moved most by Dr. Toussaint.

Stan and his wife Max were the two nicest people you would ever want to meet. I had an instant connection with Max as she grew up a Cardinals fan with her many brothers in a small town in Arkansas. Something about them just connected with me. Every time Stan spoke to the group he started with a ‘parrot joke’. Usually each one ended with the parrot getting its owner in trouble. I am sure he has told these jokes hundreds of times in his life but he made it feel like he was speaking directly to you. Even when he told you ‘That dog won’t hunt, that horn won’t honk’ or my favorite ‘TAI’. TAI stands for Think About It. Such a simple phrase that is so impactful on so many levels. TAI.

I think Dr. Toussaint was passing on some knowledge to people who he knew may have never heard him speak as well as using that week as a reminder to all those Christians out there. He reminded us that a spiritual life is a kind of life that produces spiritual maturity. That the spiritual life is not just there, it has to be gradually developed. Christians need to well balance themselves in their walk with Christ and that their maturity process is never over. Christians know we are not perfect so we need to show others that by the grace of Jesus Christ we are saved. He also reminded us that we need to do our best to flee immorality. This will help us lead by example.

Stan’s final message to us was that listening to God is the most important thing we do. Faith always involves getting the information, making the mental decision, and trusting in God. These rules of faith are covered in the Bible.

Northern Pines does its best to feed the needs of Christians who come and gather each year in Wisconsin. I would miss the time with my friends that I continue to make each year. It is also nice to have God speak to you thru speakers that you may not know. I was honored this year to hear a legend. The best thing is that he was the nicest guy and a Godly example of the complete Christian life. Don’t you wish you could be thought of like that? TAI

Hunt For Red October

Red October T-Shirt

Red October T-Shirt

With less than two weeks left in the regular season St. Louis Cardinals fans are getting that itch for postseason. The Cardinals are tied for first place in the National League Central Division and their magic number to clinch a birth in the playoffs stands around 5 as I am writing this. So let’s just say that the Cardinals are going to the postseason. Will they win the division or settle for a Wild Card birth? All three of those spots are being fought daily between them, the Cincinnati Reds, and for the first time since 1991, the Pittsburgh Pirates. Just about anything can happen between those three and their playoff standing. The benefit the Cardinals have is that the Pirates and Reds battle each other down the stretch. I think that will help the Cards win their division with the Pirates hosting the Reds in the one game Wild Card playoff. The winner of that game will face the Dodgers while the Cardinals face the Braves again in postseason. Just my feeling.

Matt Carpenter and Yadier Molina have led the Cardinals offensively as well as with their defense. Both are among the tops in the league in hitting and Carpenter to me is the teams, if not the leagues Most Valuable Player. I think the Carp will lose some votes due to his anonymity and Yadi was the press’ choice earlier in the year. Carpenter has over 50 doubles, will be around 200 hits and scored over 100 runs. He has energized this team since he took over the leadoff spot even though he is not your typical leadoff hitter. Oh yeah, he also played 2B for the first time ever and was an All-Star and has made some pure dazzling plays with his glove and arm. He has grit, baseball smarts, and is the guy I want my son to model himself after as a player due to his hard work from college days on.

A lot of questions still need to be answered in the last two weeks. Will Allen Craig be ready to play baseball any time this year? He recently went back in a walking boot to help his injured foot. I would say yes he will be back, but he may be rusty. I don’t see him starting a game that matters at least until the NLCS. Will Lance Lynn continue his pitching greatness he has displayed in his last two starts? I sure hope so. I hope our postseason rotation looks something like: Adam Wainwright, Joe Kelly, Lance Lynn, Shelby Miller. That is my guess on the order. Just a guess and you can really switch any one around but there should be no doubt that Wainwright is your best option. Chris Carpenter recently helped him work out some kinks and he could be baseball’s best pitcher in the postseason.

Right now, game 7 of the World Series is scheduled to take place on October 31st. That means there is no more than six weeks of baseball games left to be played. I sure hope the St. Louis Cardinals have the team to go all the way and make it another Red October!

2 Years for the Blog, 15 for the Boy

Wow! Are you telling me it’s been two years since I have started writing this blog? That was a magical baseball season for the St. Louis Cardinals. This past week has reminded Cardinals fans how this team seems to find a way to win. These next six weeks plus of baseball are going to be exciting. I know we are all ready to ‘Go Crazy’ again.

Last year at this time I had a guest blogger Aimee Whetstine help me for my one year anniversary (see here) (1). This year I have decided to ask my editor, who just happens to also be my wife, Lyn, to help me with this post. You see my blog anniversary just also happens to fall the day after my son’s birthday. I was inspired by a recent episode of ‘The Familyman Show with Todd Wilson’. Todd does a podcast and weekly email that helps dads remember that being a father and husband are the most important things a man can do with his life. Todd’s website is located here (2). Well Todd was interviewing someone who is not a father and they both reminded me that one of the best things you can do for your children is to praise them. So with Lyn’s help in writing these, here go 15 things I am proud of about my son, Josh.

My Son Josh

My Son Josh

1. Godliness We got back into the church I grew up in late in 2001 when Josh was 3. He has been deeply involved with the Sunday school program, did Bible Study Fellowship for years, is involved with Christian camps, and now in the youth program. His faith is not ours and we know as he grows he will be challenged. You can easily tell my son is filled with God’s spirit.
2. Heart That spirit fills my son’s heart. I frequently get comments on Josh’s helpfulness and caring for others. Recently, he helped a girl on crutches get thru the food line at camp then went and got his food. He did this without being asked.
3. Compassion Josh’s big heart shows his compassion for others. From helping people at church to helping kids at school, he di splays this frequently.
4. Gentleman At 15, my son is growing up to be a fine young man. That heart of his has made him a friend of many. He frequently opens doors for his mother and he also just does the right things when it comes to etiquette and manners.
5. Openness Josh is confident enough with us to share his thoughts and opinions while giving you reasons for them. No one in our family is normally described as shy but Josh displays a more subtle confidence about him which lends authority to his words.
6. Socialness We love the fact that Josh will play games with his parents and our friends. It’s great to have a teenager who is willing to hang out with you. Josh and I play games on PlayStation together and he will play golf (the card game), Phase 10, and many others with us. He even asks us frequently to do this more. It means a lot to him to be social.
7. Attention It is always reassuring that when you are talking to Josh, you know you have his full attention. Lyn knows that when he smiles, he is engaging you to let him know he is listening.
8. Intelligence There is now doubt that Josh got his ‘book smarts’ from his mother. He is way smarter than I was at his age and is taking classes I only laughed at. His ability to think and process things is a gift.
9. Fun Josh is just a fun person to be around. He will tease with you and make you laugh. He notices when people are down and goes out of his way to help cheer them up.
10. Brave Josh has done many things that have been brave to me. From going to a baseball tryout to going to Wisconsin by himself and taking care of someone else’s kids for a week.
11. Resiliency Josh has broken two different bones that have ended sports seasons yet he still attended the rest of the teams game and cheered on his teams. I wish mono on no child but currently Josh is dealing with it. He has only missed a half day of school so far. He has missed participating in the sports but will still attend the Freshman Football games and baseball league games he will be unable to participate in.
12. Leadership Josh is a leader. This is a quality in him I saw at a very young age. I have heard it from many teachers and have seen it first hand on the sports field. He loves playing catcher. I believe he thinks he can help his team best there at times. Even when he doesn’t play there he leads. When Josh first started playing football last year, he was a middle linebacker and calling plays by the team’s first scrimmage.
13. Dedication He does his homework without asking. He works on things he needs improvement on. He takes criticism well and works all the time to improve himself. You may not meet a more dedicated person when he puts his mind to it.
14. Athlete Many of you know that Josh is an athlete. I need to remember to praise him more for this because sometimes it comes easy for him. He works hard at practices and many coaches have told me that they would love to have a whole team like him.
15. Friendship Nothing am I more proud of Josh is the fact I can also call my son my friend. Yes things may get rough at times. Know if you are his friend, you will always have his caring for you in his heart. This someday will make my son a great husband to some lucky woman and a great father.

Thank you all again for reading this blog. There have been over 6,000 views of my blog since it has started with my single biggest day being 198 people reading it. Your support to me and my family mean a lot. I hope you all continue to share the love of Christ, the passion for the St. Louis Cardinals, and the joys and struggles of life with us in the future.

Vacation Reflection and Thoughts Part One

This year’s trip to Northern Pines was different. I knew this from the get go. It ended up being a very good different. Our normal 7 hour trip took about 8.5 hours after being caught behind a wreck just north of Springfield, Illinois on Highway 55. I will never forget the city at the next exit being Atlanta. Who knew there was an Atlanta, Illinois?

When we got to camp, we found out that there were two young ladies who were injured during first week and who were now walking around with crutches. One was the girl we were scheduled to bring home and the other belonged to the couple who we would soon become close with, as they were the other half of our transition team, Todd and Janelle Rau. Both girls were off of crutches by Monday so that was good.

It was nice to see some of our friends Friday night and Saturday morning that were there for the first week of Northern Pines. Our work was just starting when they all left. The first thing Todd and I did was get some of the kids luggage moved to where they would be staying that night. Where that actually was changed a few times from that morning to late afternoon thanks to God’s hand at play and some fine negotiating skills by Todd and myself. The Green Lakes staff was wonderful to us on the changes and they were really accommodating. We got the kids fed, got them a makeshift set up to watch a movie and off to bed by 9:45 pm. I had all of the young men in my cabin so there were 22 of us on beds and mattresses across the cabin. They were great guys who caused no trouble and most slept to around the 9:30 am wake up call. After worship service and lunch, Todd and I moved more luggage and then both families helped with the check in or greeting process. I waved to many friends standing by the side of the road and was able to help some camp first timers. Lyn got to help with check in.

Lyn and I got to our rooms and Josh got all taken care of in his accommodations and our week at Northern Pines had officially begun. During the weekend transition time we worked with some old friends who we thought were only there first week but stayed for both, so that was fun to discover. God knew what he was doing some time ago planting the idea of giving back to the Raus and myself and then into the director, Dean Jaderston on the formation of our ‘Transition Team’. Both of our boys play baseball and we are all huge Disney Freaks.

Who Said Things Go As Planned?

You all remember me? I am Jeff White, I am a part time blogger. I went on vacation a few weeks ago. Here I was thinking that I might have time to write a blog or two while on vacation, write one after telling you all about the wonderful things that have happened, and give my two cents on Cardinals baseball. Well, the one about vacation is half written. I will finish that shortly, I promise. I need to share how good God is.

Life goes on. This will probably be what I call a dump blog. It should take me about 20 minutes to write this and a few hours for my wife to edit and get the picture uploaded.

Would you believe I am the father of a freshman in high school? At Pattonville High School even? Yeah, I graduated Parkway North but both my brother and sister went to Pattonville. Josh has had a tiring first week with all of his challenge classes and football practice to wear him out. The good news is that he has settled on a home for baseball for the next year. He will be playing for the American National Eagles (1). They are a SLABA (2) based team that will get him about 40 games next spring and summer at a much cheaper rate than club ball. They want him to be a team leader and more catching will be in his future. He will still be able to play some fall ball with most of his old team.

Work has been crazy hectic. I can’t say much but I will say the hardest part in my job is learning what my job is and not saying too much to my customers. I also need to sound nicer than normal because of my apparent rough tone. I will take all feedback as good stuff and work at improving myself.

My wife has continued to be my rock and I am thankful for my dogs and good alcohol to get me thru this. I am also grateful for friends who distract me to help me get me thru all of this.

Speaking of friends. Today has been one of those days to put things into perspective. A tiny baby boy was born to the great Miller family. I am proud to know them and be invited to stop by on his birth day.

So for any of you who have missed my weird writing, here you go. Thanks for all of your support and I promise I will write more as time allows.
